#songoftheday / REVIEW: Đông Nhi ft.Mei: “BOOM BOOM”

If this song doesn’t impress you, well, then you’re probably someone who gets all bent out of shape whenever they’re in line somewhere and they hear someone speak to their kids in a foreign language.  It never ceases to amaze me how intolerant people can be about music in foreign languages.  I think it’s naive to think that all the best music comes from the U.S. and only listen to that stuff.  Or to only listen to stuff from countries where English is the language most of the music is in.  But it’s their loss, really, because there’s so much brilliant music being made in countries where they don’t speak English.  At least many kids and teenagers today are listening to K-Pop, which is generally catchier than American pop.  Anyway, to get to my point, Đông Nhi’s new song, “BOOM BOOM,” is one hell of a pop song.  It’s got elements of electro-pop, hip-hop, dubstep, etc, and she makes it all fit together brilliantly.  Do I understand the Vietnamese parts?  No.  But I still appreciate the music and her voice is charismatic even if you don’t understand every word she sings.  But she actually does use quite a bit of English in this song, so even if you’re generally intolerant of music in foreign languages, you should still give this one a chance?  I mean, would it be so bad if you like a song that has some Vietnamese in it?  Do you think you’re going to get infected with some bug if you enjoy something that’s not English or that you’ll have your citizenship yanked? Of course, I’m preaching to the choir here.  Most of my Love is Pop readers also read my reviews of Japanese, Korean, Chinese — and, occasionally, yes, Vietnamese — on our sister site OtakuDX. The reason I’m posting this one here is because it’s the best new song I could find on Youtube today and I needed a song of the day here so I simply decided to use it here.  I really hope that you’ll give it a chance and enjoy it.  It’s really quite unlike anything you’ve probably ever heard before.  It is infectious though, so watch out you don’t get contaminated when you listen to it!
