REVIEW: BLOOD RED SHOES: WATER

Last year Blood Red Shoes, the duo consisting of Steven Ansell and Laura-Mary Carter, released one of the year’s very best albums in the form of In Time To Voices. Why they stopped promoting that and released a new 3 song E.P. is beyond me, but I’ll take all of the tunes from these two that they want to give me, so I’m not complaining.

Water opens with “Red River,” which features raw, distorted guitars and loud, chugging drums along with some dirty bass guitar riffs. It’s like a cross between the material on In Time To Voices and Queens Of The Stone Age circa Lullabies to Paralyze. “Give it up, give it up, give it up again,” the two sing, harmonizing brilliantly, their vocals providing a smooth contrast to their filthy, post-grunge brand of alt-rock.

Track 2, “Black Distractions” features the same raw as hell music with darker lyrics, “When you close your eyes, I’ll be there to summon the devil inside of you,” sings Ansell. It could be an out-take from the Them Crooked Vultures album, only it’s considerably catchier than anything on that album managed to be.

It’s harder to understand the lyrics on track three, “Idle Hands.” They’re not indecipherable, mind you, just buried in a wall of scuzzy guitars and beaucoup distortion. This one is super rough around the edges, like Black Sabbath playing guitars with razor blades. It’s kind of nasty but you can’t turn it off.
