BOSTON CALLING SEPTEMBER 2015: DAY TWO PREVIEW

Boston Calling day two was a blast yesterday!  We’ll have full coverage tomorrow, but for now a few words…

DOOMTREE:

High energy rapping with big beats… BC might not have a hip-hop headliner this time around, but Doomtree filled the rap void nicely.

STEPHEN MALKMUS AND THE JICKS:

Malkmus and company rocked the house with his brand of  rock ‘n’ roll, which consists of shades of American, folk and roots rock.  Yesterday his music kept reminding me of “Sweet Home Alabama” and I suspect that’s something he’d be proud of.

STRUGILL SIMPSON:

Simpson delivered a healthy dose of sweet, old fashioned country.  He’s more like Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash than the country-flavored pop that passes for country today.  Cheers to that.

FATHER JOHN MISTY:

If ever there was an artist people seem to love or hate, it’s Father John Misty, who recently covered Ryan Adams covering Taylor Swift, which was better than Adams covering Swift (in my opinion).  He didn’t do any Swift covers yesterday though.  Just his ’70’s AM Gold style rock, which reminded me of America, Ambrosia and other soft rock bands of that ilk yesterday… Sweet, sweet stuff.

WALK THE MOON:

These guys reminded me of a young Duran Duran, the frontman like a young Simon Le Bon.  I’d say these cats received the most enthusiastic response of the day.

CHROMEO:

The coolest of the day, by far, what with their mirrors behind the stage that made them radiate at all times.  Their funky music never sounded better either.

CHVRCHES:

Perfect synth pop.  Lauren Mayberry talked about her snot and that was kind of gross, but her band’s music was beautiful and ultra-catchy.

alt-J:

The most “out there” group of the day.  Their music is like sci-fi meets math rock meets alternative…  They’re more like Radiohead than Muse, but then you could say they split the difference between the two.  With a dash of U2 thrown in for good measure.

It was an impressive day, all around. Lots of fun.  Boston Calling rules!
