#songoftheday / REVIEW: MONUMENTS – “I, The Creator”

Looking for a monstrous new metal track to brighten your day? Well, look no further. Monuments’ “I, The Creator” is a sharp metal blade ready to pierce your ears wide open while it fills your head with images of dragons rising from cracks in the ground following a horrifying earthquake. Actually, we’re not entirely sure what it’s about, but here’s a lyric sample from one of the parts with clean vocals: “This is the end / Of promises made that were never meant to.” So, of course, with that in mind we can’t help but think of apocalyptic things when we listen to it. And, hey, if a metal song makes you think of the apocalypse then it’s doing something right. On a serious note, this is a phenomenal track that mixes clean, soaring vocals with metalcore style screaming and grunting. Meanwhile, the music contains elements of just about every type of metal out there. It’s like In Flames meets Dream Theatre meets Korn meets Rage Against The Machine. And if that doesn’t pique your interest then, well, there’s no hope for you.

Here’s some info from the press release:

“The Amanuensis”, MONUMENTS’ sophomore album and follow up to 2012’s critically acclaimed “Gnosis”, is scheduled for a release on the following dates:

Europe / Australia /NZ: June 23rd, 2014

USA / Canada: July 8th, 2014

“The Amanuensis”, at least the title, was inspired by author David Mitchell’s novel, “Cloud Atlas”. The complex story lines are the perfect analog for MONUMENTS. Musically, the group weave in and out of themes, motifs, and professor-like note calculations with graceful ease. But lyrically “The Amanuensis” comes from a very different place. “The album is about the Samsara cycle,” reveals Browne (guitar). “The cyclical existence of life that we are all bound to.”

The story of “The Amanuensis” is divided in 11 chapters whose titles read as follows:

1. I, The Creator

2. Origin Of Escape

3. Atlas

4. Horcrux

5. Garden Of Sankhara

6. The Alchemist

7. Quasimodo

8. Saga City

9. Jinn

10. I, The Destroyer

11. Samsara

Before touring Europe right around the release of “The Amanuensis” with Protest The Hero MONUMENTS are about to embark on a quick tour on the mainland with support coming from Dioramic.
